News.

American Apparel has had one of its website ads banned by the Australian Advertising Standards Bureau because complainants from the public have said the images are too “suggestive” and “sexualised”.

DEEEEERRRRRR.

The pictures in question were of a young woman named "Liz", rolling about on a bed with one entire breast (!!!!!) exposed. Could she have been having sex? Was some old sicko behind the camera?

It's this kind of speculative thinking that has provoked the complainants into taking action - resulting in American Apparel withdrawing the ad from their website.

The Advertising Standards Bureau ruling went as follows:

The Board determined that these images did not treat sexuality and nudity with sensitivity to the relevant audience and that the images breached section 2.3 of the Code [that advertisers shall treat sex, sexuality and nudity with sensitivity to the relevant audience and, where appropriate, the relevant programme time zone.]

Luckily they still think some of our favourite young woman do not breach section 2.3:

The sexualization of women in Am app ads is evident what's on show here is not the product but male chauvinism. As a man and a feminist I find the adds offensive.

I have always taken offense to these ads and I'm no prude - I'm glad you men get cheap kicks out of these "ads" and can very hilariously post such outstanding and thought provoking articles like this, but when you read articles about the duress the models are put in, the frequent sexual harassment claims against Dov Charney and the fact that bullshit like this: http://www.kevincharnas.com/uploaded_images/scrunchies-736711.jpg is used to sell hair elastics, I think you'd find a lot of chicks happy with the decision by the AASB and hope there are further penalties ahead....

@KBro Hi KBro. just to clarify: I wrote this post and I'm a woman. The point I was trying to make is that they pulled a single random ad now, despite the fact that virtually 75 per cent of the American Apparel ads are "sexualised" and "suggestive". was going for irony.

@Suz at Pedestrian my irony detector must have been off while I was reading -must have been all the "suggestive" and "sexualised" (!!!!) images of chicks you follow up the post with that knocked it for 6...

TITTIES!
Suz at Pedestrian - May 31, 2010 at 06:36pm
@Kbro that's the point I was making. The ad that got pulled featured a young "sexualised" girl in "suggestive" poses; but doesn't every second photo on the Am App site feature sexually suggestive pics of females (including Nathalia, Shelley, etc)? That's why I said: "Luckily they still think some of our favourite young woman do NOT breach section 2.3." - because it's pretty obv those pictures breach the code too.
