Trend pieces are great. Australian trend pieces are even better. But Australian trend pieces on The Melbourne Cup are the best. To write one, just spout off a few cringe inducing but vague neologisms - apparently the "masstige" are the aspirational masses as if everyone doesn't desire success. Throw in some terrible equestrian puns "no wonder fashion and beauty companies are champing at the bit" and garnish with a hyperbolic quote. For that last part you'll need Andy Kay, the Seven Network's executive producer of Melbourne Cup Carnival coverage who described the event as "Like the Oscars meets the Super Bowl". Of course the phrase "Like the Oscars meets the Super Bowl" should only be prefaced with "The Olympics are" or "Wouldn't it be cool if theater sports was global" but Kay seems to disagree.

Besides The Denver Broncos and some horse riding scenes in Brokeback Mountain we're not too sure how The Melbourne Cup in any way resembles either event. In Kay's defence however, the audience for both The Melbourne Cup and The Academy Awards experience a momentary fixation with tiny men. So some similarities do exist.

Find out why The Melbourne Cup is "Like the Oscars meets the Super Bowl" here.

um, have you ever actually attended the Melbourne Cup?
in terms of audience figures, it is the biggest sporting event in Australia.
in terms of fashion, while it may not interest the Surry Hills hipsters in your office, the spring racing carnival is one of the ragtrade's biggest money spinners.
so yeah, it is kind of a big deal to a lot of people.

also it's rather ironic you're using the 'recipe' cliche to talk about cliches.
