Perverts, voyeurs, nudists and everyday patrons of the Arts emerged from their homes to disrobe like hairy-arsed butterflies from the cocoon for the sake of art and diversity earlier this morning. Over 5,000 peeps bared their bums, boobs and NSFW parts along the steps of the Sydney Opera House to participate in renowned photographer Spencer Tunick's latest art piece, Mardi Gras: The Base.

The timely date of Tunick's latest installation was selected to coincide with Sydney's Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, to emphasize and celebrate the sameness of individuals - regardless of their sexual preferences. Tunick spoke about this morning's shoot saying: "Gay men and women lay naked next to their straight neighbours and this delivered a very strong message to the world that Australians embrace a free and equal society." And each other.

We're curious about how the shoot worked on an operational level - i.e. Did participants take off their clothes out in the open or do you just jump straight out of a cab with your boobs/willy on display? Were there any seedy types strutting around smiling broadly with huge erections? Did the cold impact the performance? How does it all get choreographed?

If you participated in this morning's shoot we'd love to hear about your experience.
Email ash@pedestriangroup.com.au if you feel like revealing why you went to be part of it and what the process was like.

It was fantastic and it made nudity normal, nothing perverted. There were all ages, all body types and everyone looked normal, very few looked like that you would find in a glossy glam magazine. I attended with my partner because I thought it would be sensational to be part of such a historic event. I have to say I have only become comfortable with my body in the last 6mths, but had I attented one of these installations years ago, I am sure I would have come to terms with my body and see it as normal. Shame I had to get to 50 to work out that I had a normal body type and less than 1% are like that adorned in magazines, TV and other media.

Such a wonderful experience. My Mum and I went along, thought it would be interesting that your standard mum and daughter bondng. You really get the sense Spencer is very respectful of the human body and how people are representated.. I am just chuffed I got to sit in the Opera House butt-naked.. What fun!

It was simply amaazing to be part of such a historic event. I went by myself as none of my friends would come. However I'm happy to say they honestly missed out. For once it was fine to bare all and not be ashamed of it everyone was just comfortable in their skin without worrying about how they looked. It made me realize as well just how silly it is to be self conscious about how you look. Everyone is perfect, the freaks are in the magazines....
Yes the wind was freezing and their were a lot of blue liped faces yet the butt clapping was funny as (clappng both hands to each cheek of you butt instead of together). And besides who can honestly say the first time they were inside the opera house they were naked and not arrested.

Was an amazing experience! I was worried that there were going to be pervs or exhibitionists everywhere but to my surprise it was completely the opposite. It was like any day at the opera house or any other place with a large gathering of people; there were mothers, daughters, fathers, sons & grandparents, There were expectant parents & newborn babies. Gay, straight and bisexual men and women. Basically just random people but they were all naked. You could see the excitement in everyone's eyes and as we were instructed to go to the base, we ripped our clothes off and ran up the stairs and gleefully took our places. It almost felt like over 5000 kids just took off their clothes and innocently streaked across the opera house. I mean, honestly there was a strong sense of child-like-eyes-wide-open-excitement! I wish I had my camera to capture the diverse faces that were so abundantly present in this event. The photo shoot was honestly my favorite experience in Sydney and my first time in the Opera House I was completely naked with a bunch of other people. C'mon! How many times can u say that will happen in a lifetime!
